about

In the previous Sakhioba recordings, recorded live by Radio Folk and Radio Muza (2008, 2009 respectively), one may hear a diversity of songs representing many of the unique regions of Georgia: Kartli, Kakheti, Pshavi, Khevsureti, Imereti, Guria, Lechkhumi, Adjara-Shavsheti (Machakheti), and Samegrelo. In listening to these songs, an impression of Georgia's history comes to life. The trials and tribulations of these brave, gentle, and troubled people is enacted in sound.
According to 18th century poet Sulkhan-Saba, the word sakhioba means "sweet music."
The ensemble justifies its name and it delights its listener with the sweet melodies of Georgian song.
Enjoy!

The folk and sacred music ensemble “Sakhioba” was founded in 2006, and was directed by Malkhaz Erkvanidze for 17 years.
As folk singing shares close ties with church chant, the ensemble has also dedicated itself to folklore studies, including the study of traditional folk dances and instrumental music.
The name “Sakhioba” is an old Georgian word which means "sweet sounding" music.
